Tezpur

Tezpur is a town in the state of Assam in India. It is the headquarters of Sonitpur district and is considered as one of the most beautiful towns of the state.

Tezpur is Sonitpur's largest town and the largest urban centre on the northern bank of the Brahmaputra. It is located 180 km northeast of Guwahati. It is considered the cultural capital of Assam.

The city was earlier known as Sonitpur (city of blood) and is of Puranic fame. The great mythological war believed to have been fought between Hari(Lord Krishna) and Hara (Lord Shiva) and as a result the whole city was said to have been drenched in blood, hence the name.

Situated on the north bank of the majestic river Brahmaputra, Tezpur town is of magnificient scenic beauty and exquisite archaeological ruins.

The place is also associated with the legend of princess Usha, the daughter of King Bana and prince Anirudha, the grandson of Lord Krishna for their eternal love and romance.

Some of the state’s greatest icons – Filmmaker-musician-poet Jyoti Prasad Agarwala and balladeer Bhupen Hazarika – are associated with the town. A serene town, Tezpur is famous for its beautiful parks, ancient Hindu temples and archaeological ruins steeped in mythology, legend and folklore.
