The Gupta era was one of the brightest eras in India. Administration during this period was mild and enlightened. During the fifth century, it reached its height by achieving all-round peace, prosperity and intellectual development. That is why it is also described as the golden age of northern India.

It was the time of Hindu renaissance. Brahmanism was revived but without intolerance.

Literature flourished during this period. Aryabhat was the great mathematician and Varahamihira was the great astronomer of this period.

Some of the frescoes of Ajanta was painted during this period.

The pillar at Delhi which is made of wrought iron, and the huge copper image of the Buddha at Nalanda were the notable achievement of this period.

Caste system became rigorous during this era and feudalism of the landlords emerged in north India.
