Thomas Bugeaud
Thomas Bugeaud (1784-1849) was marshal of France, born at Limoges. He served under Napoleon. He retired from service after the fall of Napoleon, and remained so till 1830, the year which reopened his military career after July Revolution. He served under Louis Philippe, and contributed to the conquest of Algiers. Thereafter, he was made governor Algeria, and created duke for his victory over the forces of the emperor of Morocco at the battle of Isly in 1844. His motto was Ense et aratro, "By sword and plough".Nearby pages
