TOGOLAND

TOGOLAND is now the nation of Togo, and most of what is now the Volta Region of Ghana.

It was a German protectorate. Togoland was situated on the Slave Coast, in Upper Guinea, Gold Coast Colony on the West, and Dahomey on the East which exported palm-oil and ivory. This region in West Africa remained German protectorate from 1884 to 1914.

After the first World War, the region was divided in 1922 between British Togoland and French Togoland. Ghana became independent from Britain in 1957. Togo gained its independence from France in 1960.
