Tonnage and Poundage
Tonnage and Poundage is the name given to certain duties first levied in Edward II's (1284 – 1327) reign on every tun of imported wine, and on every pound weight of merchandise exported or imported. Charles I's (1600 – 1649) attempt to levy these without parliamentary sanction was one of the complaints of his Long Parliament. They were swept away by the Customs Consolidation Act of 1787.Nearby pages
