Twitter is actually a micro blogging and social networking service that comes free of charge. It has its own way of conversations in the form of ‘tweets’. Tweets are 140 characters long messages that can be directly send to a user’s profile page or via Short Messaging Service (SMS). It was started in 2006 by Jack Dorsey. The idea which Mr. Dorsey proposed was that if a individual has to communicate to a small group then there has to be a platform for it. Original name was ‘twttr’ inspired by our well known photo sharing site ‘flickr’. The front page of twitter now looks like as – current updates on tweets at the middle, while showing total number of ‘tweets’, ‘followers’ and ‘following’ at the right side of the page. ‘Followers’ are the people who are following the ‘Logged On’ user and ‘Following’ are those which the ‘Logged On’ user is following. Technology is simple and quite similar to the well known ‘Internet Relay Chat’ (IRC) which is best used by hackers around the world to preserve their anonymity over cyberspace but still can chat. Twitter used a web interface ‘Ruby On Rails’ framework until 2009 when it was replaced by software ‘Scala’. The service’s Application Programming Interface or API allows web services and applications to integrate with twitter. It’s searches uses ‘hashtags’ (symbol ‘#’ followed by a word or phrase). There are other symbols like @ which generates different search results. People using tweets over the site can do free of charge but those using it over SMS have to bear their service provider’s charge. SMS service uses five gateway numbers meaning ‘short codes’ for the countries like United States Of America, Canada, India, New Zealand and Isle Of Man. When there is problem or outage, users get the following message “Too many tweets! Please wait a moment and try again” better known as “fail whale” error messages. A research firm at San Antonio named ‘Pear Analytics’ once analyzed and grouped tweets into six categories : - News, Spam, Self Promotion, Pointless Babble, Conversational, Pass along value. Another survey shows that people who cannot satisfy their needs at some level of ‘Abraham Maslow’s Hierarchy Of Needs’ tends to hang around these social networking sites more which includes morality, creativity, acceptance of facts, self – esteem, friendship, security of body and may be breathing or sleeping.
