Upanishad
Upanishad is a Sanskrit word that refers to each of the series of treaties on Vedic philosophy that are collectively called
Upanishads. Upanishad literally means 'sitting near' (the feet of the master) in Sanskrit. The treaties were called Upanishads only because the masters or the teachers expounded the philosophy of the Veds to the students sitting near by. The instruction thus given and received is Upanishad.
