Vashistha Ashram

Vashistha Ashram is in Kamrup Metropolitan district of Assam in India. It is located in the Sandhychal hills. It was built in the second half of the 18th century by the Ahom king, Raja Rajeswar.

This ashram is the last existing monument, which was constructed by the rulers of the Ahom dynasty. The ashram is the meeting point of three rivulets namely, Sandhya, Kanta and Lalita.

It is believed that the sage Vashistha used to perform his 'Sandhya' prayers in a stream near his ashram. Once he got disturbed by Lord Indra and his queen Shachi who were playing with each other in the stream along with other heavenly women. The sage then cursed Indra to have contact with a Daitya woman. Indra turned into a human being and then he had contact with a Daitya woman who begot a son to him. The boy was blessed by Indra to become a king, who later became the progenitor of the Ahom Kingdom.
