Washim

Washim is a district in the State of Maharashtra in India. The district is located between Longitude 76.7 to 77.4 deg and Latitude 19.61 to 21.16 deg.

Total area of this district is 5150 Sq Km.

There are two sub-divisions and six talukas in the district. No. Of Villages here are 789, Grampanchayats 493 and Panchayat Samities 6.

Population of the district as per census 2001 was 1020216.

History

District was formed on 1st July 1998. It has great pilgrimage past. Devotees believe that Tirupati’s Lord Balaji comes here for resting after the harvest. Shreekshetra Pohradevi is known as Kashi of Banjara community. In ancient times, it was the capital of King Wakatak, also known as Vatsagulm. During British regime, Washim acquired the status of a district due to its strategic location.
