Wildcatting

Wildcatting, in oil an natural gas industry, is the activity of drilling for oil in the locations outside the established oilfields in the unexplored or wild areas.

Wildcatting, in finance, is also a policy that calls for the review of an entire industry, if a few of the companies within that industry undergo critical problems, such as accounting fraud. The policy is instituted by the US Securities and Exchange Commission.
