WILLIAM DWIGHT WHITNEY

WILLIAM DWIGHT WHITNEY (1827-1894), American philologist, born in Massachusetts; studied at Yale College, where he became professor of Sanskrit, in which he was a proficient, and to the study of which he largely contributed; has done much for the science of language.
