William Jennings Bryan

William Jennings Bryan (1860 - 1925) was a US statesman, born in Salem, Illinois. He was bred to the bar and practised at it. He entered Congress in 1890 as an extreme Free Silver man. He lost his seat from his uncompromising views on that question. Beginning in 1896, he emerged as a dominant force in the Democratic Party. He was thrice nominated for the Presidency in opposition to Mr McKinley, but defeated.
