William Murray (1704-1793), Earl of Mansfield, was Lord Chief-Justice of England, born in Perth, called to the bar in 1730. He distinguished himself as a lawyer, entered Parliament in 1743, and became Solicitor-General, accepted the chief-justiceship in 1756. He was impartial as a judge, but unpopular; raised to the peerage in 1776, and resigned his judgeship in 1789.
