ZENOBIA

Zenobia (240-300) was queen of Palmyra, which is now modern Syria. This Palmyran (Syrian) queen was also a military leader and ultimately queen of the East, was a woman of great courage and surpassing beauty. She was married to Odenathus.

After assassination of her husband (c 267), she led army in war of expansion and conquered Egypt (269) and most of the eastern provinces in Asia Minor (270).

She named her son eastern emperor. Her ambition provoked the jealousy of the Emperor Aurelian, who marched an army against her. He suffered a succession of defeats, however, finally subdued her. She and her son were finally defeated and captured by the Roman emperor Aurelian in 272.

When she was captured, she blamed her secretary for the war to save herself. However, she was taken to Rome to adorn his triumph as conqueror though afterwards he presented her with a domain at Tivoli, where she spent the rest of her days in queen-like dignity, with her two sons by her side.
