She is a well known trade union leader of Punjab and is a member of the AITUC general council.

The seat fell vacant after the resignation of sitting member Amarinder Singh over the Sutlej Yamuna Link canal issue. The election will take place on February 4, 2017, along with the state assembly elections. The left parties have extended full support to her candidature.
