The British people use to say "come September" as a relief from the scorching sun and summer. For those English people who were forced to work in their tropical colonies in past also, after gruelling summers arrival of September was a great relief.
For India September came this year with horrifying headlines in bold in newspapers. “Minus 23.9 percent" that started sending cold shivers down our spines right in the month of September.
Yes, officially GDP is down by 23.9 percent. Just in January or February this year, we were promised double digit growth and 5 trillion dollar economy by our union finance minister.
“It is an act of God", the finance minister is making an attempt to transfer the guilt of ruining economy of our country onto the shoulders of God, The Almighty.. Only just on August 5th of this year, Honourable prime minister laid the foundation stone for a RAM MANDIR in Ayodhya, declared August 5th to be another 15th August... Historical for him... Because in a secular India, the chief elected executive felt satisfied and fulfilled for making temple. “There are people in the world so hungry that God can not appear to them except in the form of bread”.
Corona is definitely a great, scary and dangerous health hazard, Pandemic that engulfed the whole world just in a couple of months. Most severe measures were to be adopted that include complete halt to air traffic, rail and road traffic, closure of industrial units.... Thus effecting the economy all over the world. The world economy was already facing recession before the arrival of corona on scene.
Communist Party of India, continuously was warning about recession and pointing out that so called reforms which actually were deforms like commercialization of education, health, privatization of public sector undertakings, reckless liberalization to allow foreign capital into every sector etc are not the Solution and these policies will lead to complete disaster ruining our economy..
Modi 0.1....means Modi policies during his first term were marked by two major steps − Demonetisation and GST. The Demonetisation led to ruining of informal sector, caused immense misery to poor and totally failed in curbing corruption, terrorism and black money the aims ostensibly declared by Modi while announcing demonetisation in 2016. GST further delivered a blow to MSME sector, had cut deeply in the revenue of states thus killing federal spirit and made states to depend on the mercy of union government.
Today most of the state governments are not able to pay salaries to their employees. Union government advices that the state governments to take loan from RBI.
It is an irony that when Mr. Modi was the Chief Minister of Gujarat, the state government strongly opposed the GST. Now when Modi is Prime Minister the union government started implementing GST in the name of One Nation One Tax’’. The state governments have to give up 70 per cent of their taxing powers including the entire VAT regime to usher in GST regime. It was on the promise made by Union Government to give full compensation of shortfall in GST collection for five years.
The Communist Party of India raised the question of fiscal federalism and the powers of state governments at the time of debate on GST in Parliament. It also pointed out that the GST regime is an effort to create a common market for the corporate and big business houses.
The global financial meltdown of 2008 exposed the realities of the neo-liberal world order more scathingly. During the debate on this issue the then finance minister Pranab Mukherjee and the then Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh claimed that the fundamentals of Indian economy were strong to withstand the impact of the global financial crisis. They also acknowledge the role of public sector banks and financial institutions.
2008 World economic crisis was triggered by the collapse of two financial institutions because of excessive lending and failure in getting those loans repaid. The NPAs today are the major problem that banking industries are facing. Modi government has failed to take tangible actions for the recovery of Bank loans and criminal actions against the willful defaulters and against the fugitives who are living in abroad happily.
COVID-19 lock down declared in the month of March 2020 even though the first case was reported in India at the end of January itself. Modi government was busy in making preparations for the welcome to American President Trump. The BJP and RSS outfits were aggressive in breaking the anti-CAA protest across the country especially in Delhi and polarizing the people on communal lines for taking advantage in Delhi Assembly elections.
In the month of June the present India-China stand-off happened. Despite talks at different levels the stand-off continues.
Being a rightwing government Modi continuously tries to use demagogy, starting from Achhe Din, Skill India, Start up India, Make in India, Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas (now Sabka Vishwas added), Vocal for Local and finally Atmanirbhar to deceive people while systematically destroying the fundamentals of our economy particularly privatizing the public sector undertakings.
It should be noted that Modi talks about Atmanirbhar Bharat by selling our land, our water, our forest and finally our space too and making one Ambani investing even in toys industry, making another Ambani rich by Raffale deal, selling airport after airport to Adani, Selling railways, ruthless privatization of health, education and social infrastructure. Pseudo nationalism is used to restrain resistance to the Modi misrule
Jingoism and ultra nationalism are being pushed forward to divert the minds of people. Attacking the activists and suppressing the voice of dissent and difference put democracy in peril.
Federalism is being destroyed. We know how nefariously Article 370 was abrogated. Citizenship Amendment Act is the worst blow on secular character of Indian constitution. Every effort is being made to polarize masses along communal lines. Attack on Reservation of SC/ ST/OBC and increasing atrocities on Dalits and Adivasis show clearly that how the government is subverting the policy of affirmative action and social justice as enshrined in the Constitution.
This government is insensitive to the sufferings of the people. People should not be left hopeless and insecure. The Left should lead the resistance mobilizing people and leading them in struggles. The fight for the overthrow of this corporate, communal, fascist government of BJP-RSS has become imperative to save the country and the Constitution. At a time when rightwing ideologues declare that there is no opposition in the country, Left should take up this challenge and emerge as real opposition to RSS-BJP combine and a force to unite all secular democratic forces. MODI GOVT POLICIES ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR DEEPENING ECONOMIC CRISIS
UNITED MOBILISATION OF OPPOSITION FORCES NEEDED TO CHALLENGE NDA
D. Raja - 2020-09-03 11:29
Politics and economics cannot be separated. Politics is the concentrated expression of economics. The politics of RSS-BJP combine is responsible for the present state of economy, unprecedented decline of GDP to -23.9 per cent and for the huge devastation and despair of the toiling people of India.
