The agitation, details of which are being worked out, is to record the LDF’s strong sense of outrage against what it called the United Democratic Front (UDF) Government’s anti-people policies.
The tone and tenor of the statements issued by both the State CPI(M) secretariat and leader of the Opposition V S Achuthanandan indicate that the LDF has decided to up the ante without waiting for the customary six-month ‘probation’ period to be over.
What has fuelled the Left’s righteous indignation is the blatant violation of rules by the UDF Government in sabotaging investigations against three of its ministers. This sinister objective is being sought to be achieved by resorting to a mass transfer of top police officers probing the cases against the UDF ministers like Health Minister Adoor Prakash, Industries Minister P K Kunhalikutty and Panchayats Minister M K Muneer.
The LDF anger is also directed at the Oommen Chandy Government’s ‘total surrender’ to the private medical college managements in the matter of admission to self-financing medical colleges.
The political heat outside is bound to get reflected in the proceedings in the two-week session of the State Assembly, which has already commenced.
Apart from the above-mentioned issues, the LDF has another potential weapon to grill the UDF Government: The Kerala High Court’s order against Socialist Janata Party (Democratic) MLA Shreyams Kumar asking him to vacate by June 30 the 14-acre land in his possession so that the same can be distributed among the landless tribals in the state.
With the High Court verdict strongly criticizing Mr Shreyams Kumar, for encroaching on land belonging to the tribals, the UDF Government will have no option but to take over the land, it is being pointed out. Needless to stay, the court order has come as a major political and legal embarrassment to the UDF Government as the SJ(D) to which Mr Shreyams Kumar belongs, is an ally of the ruling UDF. He is also the son of SJD president Mr M P Veerendra Kumar who formed the SJD and left the LDF to join the UDF before the assembly elections.
Quick to cash in on the issue, the Adivasi Kshema Samithi (AKS), a pro-CPM outfit, has decided to organize a protest march to the 14-acre land site. This will be followed up by a convention on June 30 and an agitation, the AKS leaders have warned. (IPA)
