These two agreements were signed earlier between the two countries and had expired on February 2012.
The decision to extended the life time of these two nuclear agreements was taken at the two-day Expert Level meeting on Conventional and Nuclear Confidence Building Measures (CBMs) which concluded here on Friday.
The last Expert level meetings on Conventional and Nuclear Confidence Building Measures (CBMs) between India and Pakistan were held on December 26-27, 2011 in Islamabad. During their meeting in Islamabad on September 8, 2012, the External Affairs Minister and Foreign Minister of Pakistan had agreed that the next round would be held in the second half of December 2012.
Pursuant to the Agreement between the Foreign Ministers of India and Pakistan during their meeting on September 8, 2012 in Islamabad, the Seventh Round of Expert Level Talks on Nuclear CBMs was held in New Delhi on December 27-28.
The Pakistani delegation to the talks was led by Additional Secretary (UN & EC) in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Aizaz Ahmad Chaudhry. The Indian delegation was led by Joint Secretary (Disarmament and International Security Affairs), in the Ministry of External Affairs DB Venkatesh Varma.
According to sources, the talks were held in a cordial and constructive atmosphere. Both sides focused on review of implementation and strengthening of existing CBMs in the framework of the Lahore MoU, as well as possibilities for mutually acceptable additional CBMs.
Both sides reviewed working of existing Agreements on Pre-Notification of Flight Tests of Ballistic Missiles and Reducing the Risk from Accidents relating to Nuclear Weapons and expressed satisfaction that the latter was extended for a further five year period from February 2012.
The two sides will report progress made in the talks to their respective Foreign Secretaries.
