He is also scheduled to meet his counterparts from Pakistan and Nepal.
Dr Singh who left for Washington to meet President Obama on Wednesday on way to New York said: “During my visit to New York, I also look forward to bilateral meetings with the leaders of some of our neighbouring countries, including Bangladesh, Nepal and Pakistan.”
The Indian Prime Minister is soon scheduled to inaugurate a 400kv power transmission line for supplying power to Bangladesh. In this context, he is likely to invite the Bangladesh Prime Minister on this occasion.
As the issues of sharing of Teesta waters between the two countries and the implementation of the Land Boundary Agreement still hang in limbo, India wants to give the incumbant Hasina Government a handle as it goes for polls in 2014.
“We have such close relations with Bangladesh that our ties span an entire gamut of issues. Despite the fact that neither the Teesta waters nor the land boundary agreement has gone through, you must know that we remain deeply committed to delivering on these agreements. So, there will be plenty to talk about whether it is our cooperation on the economic side, lines of credit, supply of power, any number of issues in keeping with the very close nature of relations between our two countries,” said the Indian Foreign Secretary Sujatha Singh.
Dr Singh is likely to meet his Pakistani counterpart and stress the need for bringing the perpetrators of 26/11 terror attack to justice. With his Nepali counterpart, Dr Singh is likely to discuss the current situation in Nepal.
