Such units are regularly unearthed during anti-Maoist operations in LWE affected States. Data of such illegal arms manufacturing units are maintained by the States concerned and not centrally in the Union Ministry of Home Affairs. The Maoists set up their own workshops in remote and inaccessible areas, it is learnt officially. However, the raw material is sourced from urban centres of towns and cities.
According to the Union Ministry of Home Affairs, following unearthing of a gun manufacturing unit of the Maoists from the Charara Dera forest, district West Singhbhum, Jharkhand, on January 24, 2014, the security forces recovered a number of items including liquid explosives, ammunition, explosive manufacturing material and electronic equipment. No one has so far been arrested.
The official sources in the Union Home Ministry maintains that the Maoists have received a major set back with the arrest of TRAM Chief Sadanala Rama Krishna along with four of his associates in Kolkata on February 29, 2012. Added to this, four more activists of TRAM including Asim Kumar Bhattacharya, in charge of Mumbai unit of TRAM, were arrested in Mumbai on March 1, 2012. The police also recovered a large number of components meant for manufacture of Rocket Launchers, Rocket Propelled Grenades and other related arms and ammunition from them. This action is believed to have dented significantly the weapons making ability of the Maoists.
The measures taken, so far, to bust such illegal arms manufacturing units include deployment of security forces at strategic locations, police action against such unlawful activities and intensified intelligence based anti-naxal operations.
The Union Government in the Ministry of Home Affairs monitors closely the situation and issues intelligence alerts and advisories to the LWE affected State Governments on a regular basis in this regard.
With the change of the Government at the Centre following the General Elections 2014, a fresh look is being given to the entire spectrum of internal security. Accordingly, sternest possible measures would be taken to contain Maoists, subversives, insurgents, terrorists and destructionists to ensure peace and progress of the nation!
Maoists’ own arms manufacturing units across India!

The CPI(Maoist) Party, which is outlawed in India, has its own weapons manufacturing devices called the Technical Research and Arms Manufacturing (TRAM) units across the country in the Left Wing Extremist (LWE) States. The TRAM caters to the weapons and ammunition requirements of the CPI (Maoist) over and above the arms and ammunitions that the Maoists seize from the Police and Central Para Military Forces in the LWE States.
