Cape Comorin
Cape Comorin is the old name of Kanyakumari. In 19th century description, it was described as a low sandy point, the most southerly of India. However, the landscape has changed. While there are still sandy coastlines and beaches in the area, Kanyakumari is geographically a rocky headland. The modern landmarks include 133-foot-tall Thiruvalluvar Statue and the Vivekananda Rock Memorial, both built on the rocks just off the coast. The beckoning peak historically referred to by sailors as Comorin Peak or Marunthuvazh Malai, a 370-meter-high, isolated conical mountain is located about 4 miles northwest of the cape, but today sailors look for the modern Kanyakumari Lighthouse rather than old topographic landmarks.Nearby pages
