Pronouncing A

+ The letter A (capital) or a (small), the first letter of the English alphabet, is sounded with its name Ae, when written singly. When written in combination with other letters, they are generally not sounded by their names, but differently with their proper pronunciations. When used separately in an expression, is pronounced distinctly in two ways. In normal statement, such as, I saw a (uh) man, and in emphasized statement, such as, He wanted a (as pronounced in ate) dog, not anything else!

+ A has four basic sounds. It is open, full, and long (slender) when the words are of English language, such as in aid, fame, favour, efficacious. It is close, curt, short (stopped) when the words are borrowed in English from French, such as in bat, banner, balance, carrying. It is braodish and grave (middle), when the words are borrowed from Italian, such as in far, father, aha, comma, scoria, sofa. It is broad, when the words are borrowed from Dutch, German, or Old-Saxon, such as in wall, haul, walk, warm, water.

+ In Ay, it is diphthong. Here a has a middle sound as pronounced in ah, and y is pronounced like open e, or more properly ee, but feeble.

+ Aa, as in the word baa, which is cry of a sheep, it is broadish and grave (middle), and only one a is pronounced.

+ Aa, when pronounced as improper diphthong in a single syllable, usually has close sound, such as in Balaam, Canaan, Isaac.

+ When double a (Aa or aa) are parts to two syllables, they are pronounced separately, and marked by two dots above the latter, such as in as in Baäl, Gaäl, Gaäsh. This diacritical mark consisting two dots is called diaeresis.
