A or a

A or a, the first uppercase and lowercase letters in the English alphabet, also known as Roman or Latin script, are used as article before a word beginning with a consonant sound, for example, a book.

It must be noted that the usage of the article is regulated on the basis of sound. That is why, writing 'a MA' is wrong despite the letter M is consonant. When we pronounce MA, the sound for M is not consonant but begins with a vowel 'a'.
