Abyss

Abyss, in mythology, is the region of hell that is conceived as bottomless. In Middle English, this word was used for 'infernal pit'.

That is why a deep chasm, seemingly bottomless, is also called abyss.

This word is sometimes used figuratively to refer to a very wide difference between people, or nations.
