Adi Granth

Adi Granth, also known as the Granth or the Granth Sahib, is the first sacred book of the Sikhs. This principal sacred scripture of Sikhism is basically a compilation of hymns, religious poetry and teachings of the first five Gurus of the sect.

It was originally compiled under the direction of Guru Arjan Dev (1563-1606) who was the fifth Guru of the Sikhs. It was completed on August 30 , 1604, and installed for the first time on September 1, 1604 at Harimander Sahib by Guru Arjan Dev himself.

Later, it was enlarged by the tenth Sikh Guru, Guru Gobind Singh by adding shabads and other teachings and hymns during 1704 to 1706. In 1708, just before his death, Guru Gobind Singh affirmed the Adi Granth as the perpetual Guru of the Sikhs and the Granth then became known as the Sri Guru Granth Sahib.
