Aix-la-Chapelle

Aix-la-Chapelle, the French name for Aachen, is one of the oldest cities in Germany. It is an industrial city, but also famous for spa. The city is located in western Germany, in North Rhine-Westphalia. It is a centre of manufacturing industries and an important trade centre. The city is celebrated for its octagonal cathedral in the middle of which is a stone marking the burial-place of Charlemagne.

During the era of Rhenish Prussia, it was made capital of the German empire by Charlemagne. It derived its name from its mineral springs. The city is also known for treaties of peace in 1668 and 1748, and for a European congress held here in 1818.
