Al-Hallaj

Al-Hallaj (d. 922), full name Al-Husayn ibn Mansur al-Hallaj, was a Persian Sufi mystic and saint who was executed for heresy by Caliph Muqtadir for proclaiming the 'Doctrine of Identity'. He was reported to have said, 'I am the Truth'.

Wisdom & Quotes

  • I hear people are going about saying I am a saint, and others saying that I am impious. I prefer those who call me impious; and so does God. ... They call me a saint because they respect me; but the others call me impious out of zeal for their religion. A man who is zealous for his religion is dearer to me, and dearer to God also, than a man who venerates a creature.
