Alcaeus of Mitylene

Alcaeus of Mitylene (c.620-c.580 BC) was a Greek lyric poet known for inventing a new form of lyric metre called the alcaic.

He was an aristocrat by birth, a contemporary and an alleged lover of Sappho. He was much admired by the Roman poet Horace. His works also became model for him. The verse of the Renaissance also owes much to his poetry.
