Alpes

Alpes are three departments in South-East France:
the Basses-Alpes, now known as Alpes-de-Haute-Provence since 1970, in North-East part of Provence, bounded by Hautes-Alpes on the North and Var on the South, sterile in the North, fertile in the South, capital Digne.
Hautes-Alpes, forming part of Dauphiné, traversed by the Cottian Alps, climate severe, capital Gap; and
Alpes Maritimes, East of the Basses-Alpes, bordering on Italy and the Mediterranean, made up of the territory of Nice, ceded by Italy, and of Monaco and Var, capital Nice.
