Antigone

Antigone, in Greek mythology, was the daughter of Oedipus the king of Thebes and Jocasta. She led about her father when he was blind and in exile and returned to Thebes on his death.

She was condemned to be buried alive for covering her brother's exposed body with earth in defiance of the prohibition of Creon the king of Thebes. Creon was her uncle who had usurped the throne. However, she took her own life before the sentence could be carried out.

Creon's son Haemon, who was engaged to her killed himself out of love for her over her body on the spot where she was buried.

She has been immortalised in one of the grandest tragedies of Sophocles.
