Asafoetida

Asafoetida, also asafetida, is a fetid inspissated sap from an Indian umbelliferous tree. The substance is obtained from the roots of this herbaceous plant. This resinous gum is used in herbal medicine and Indian cooking.

A gum of this name is also obtained from a Eurasian plant belonging to the parsley family.

Both the plants have the same botanical name Ferula, belonging to the the family Apiaceae.
