Ayah

Ayah is term used in India for a native maid or nursemaid. The term in Anglo-Indian in origin which came from the Portuguese 'aia' which means 'nurse'. Such persons were employed by Europeans during the British Rule in India, and were addressed by the term 'ayah'. The term is still in use in India for an elderly woman employed as help for nursing children.
