Ayodhya

Ayodhya is a sister city of Faizabad in the State of Uttar Pradesh in India. The city is situated at the banks of Saryu. This is considered to be the holy city where Ram, the son of King Dashrath established Ram Rajya, the rule in which no one was tormented by the three fold miseries - Daihik (physical), Daivik (the miseries due to divine causes) and Bhautik (the miseries of the world). This city was the kingdom of the Kings of Solar dynasty.

This city is known as one of the most important ancient cities of India. The city figures in Indian mythology, where kings of Solar dynasty were rulers.

According to Ramayan, Ram was born in this city. The city became uninhabited when Ram and all the persons living there left the place and took a dip in the Saryu waters to go the heaven. Ramayan says that no creature in the area survived to live there.

For many years the city remained uninhabited. Later it became a city of pilgrimage for Hindus.

We do not have exact dates as to when this city was again inhabited. Only thing one can say that it has been a place of pilgrimage for the time immemorial. Many inhabited the place later.

When Muslim rule came, another city Faizabad was founded, and thus Faizabad and Ayodhya became twin cities.

In recent history, Ayodhya came into limelight for another reason, the controversy over Ram Janmabhumi Babri Masjid.
