Baghpat

Baghpat (also spelled Bagpat) is a district in the State of Uttar Pradesh in India. The district derives its name from its headquarter town Bagpat, which is located at between 28°57’ North Latitude and 77°13’ East Longitude. The district is bounded in the north by district Muzaffarnagar, in the south by Ghaziabad, in the west by river Yamuna and district Rohtak of Harayana.

Area of the district is 1321 sq km.

There are three tehsils, 6 blocks, 237 gram sabhas, 46 nyay panchayats, and 290 inhabites and 225 uninhabited villages in the district.

As per Census 2011, Baghpat had population of 1,303,048 of which male and female were 700,070 and 602,978 respectively.

History

The city was originally known as ‘Vyagprastha’ - Land of Tigers. In ancient days it was a dense jungle. Later it came to be known as Baghpat and finally Bagpat during the Mughal era.

The place finds mention in the Mahabharata. It is here Pandavas were conspired into living in Lakshagrih (the house of lac) to be killed by Kauravas.

Baghpat District came into existence in 1997. Prior to becoming a district, it was a Tehsil in Meerut district of Uttar Pradesh.
