Bak

Bak, in Hindu mythology, was name of several persons, including a demon, a sage, and a celestial being.

There was an an Asur of this name. He lived in a city of Ekchakra. He used to force the people of that city to send him daily a large quantity of food to eat. Sometimes, he also used to devour the men who carried food. Therefore, the people of that city decided to send provisions through a person of a family in turn. One day, the turn cam in the lot of a Brahman family. At that time, Pandavas were taking shelter with the family after having escaped from Varnavat. Kunti, the mother of the Pandavas, came to know about the distress of the family. She then told them that her son Bhim should go to Bak’s home along with the food required for him. Bhim went to Bak and challenged him to fight. Bhim tore demon’s body asunder.

There was another demon of this name who was slain by Lord Krishna. As per the story, Kans had sent some demons to kill Balram and Krishna who were yet in their childhood. One of the demons was Bak who assumed the form of a huge stork. He opened his beak and swallowed Krishna when they were playing on the bank of the river Yamuna. When the demon swallowed Krishna his throat got burnt and therefore he spitted Krishna out. Howerver, the demon himself died.

There was another Bak who was a sage. Kuber was also known as Bak.
