Balfour Stewart

Balfour Stewart (1828-1887) was a Scottish physicist and meteorologist, born in Edinburgh. After finishing his university curriculum went to Australia and engaged for some time in business. He returned to England and became director at Kew Observatory, and professor of Natural Philosophy at Owens College, Manchester. He made discoveries in radiant heat, and was one of the founders of "Spectrum Analysis". He published text-books on physics, in wide repute.
