Balsam

Balsam is a common name for aromatic resinous substances exuded by several trees and shrubs. The trees and shrubs that yield such resinous substances are also called balsam. It is named so because of its medicinal quality as of balm. It is used in production of fragrances, medicines, and cosmetics.

There is also a herbaceous plant by this name which bears pink or purple flowers high on the stem. It is cultivated as ornamental.

Balsam belongs to the genus Impatiens and the family Balsaminaceae. It has several species including the garden balsam (Impatiens balsamina) and the Himalayan balsam (Impatiens glandulifera).
