Berlin Wall

Berlin Wall was a fortified and heavily guarded wall built in 1961, chiefly to curb the flow of East Germans to the West. After the collapse of the communist regime in East Germany, it was opened in November 1989, and subsequently dismantled.

It is worth mentioning here that Berlin, the capital city of Germany, came under the Allies at the end of World War II. All the four Allies divided the city into two parts - the East Berlin and the West Berlin. The Western Allies (the United States, the United Kingdom and France) formed West Berlin, while the Soviet sector formed East Berlin. Though the city of Berlin was divided into two and the border was closed, the flow of people in large numbers could not be stopped from both sides. The East Berlin was under communist rule at that time, and on the suggestion of Soviet Union, the wall was erected overnight on the night of August 12 and 13 in 1961.

The Berlin wall separated the two parts between 1961 and 1989. When USSR disintegrated, and communist regime in East Germany collapsed in 1989, the wall was opened and finally dismantled. The demolition of the Wall officially began on June 13, 1990 and was completed in November 1991. The "fall of the Berlin Wall" paved the way for German reunification, which formally took place on 3 October 1990.
