Berm

Berm, literally a narrow space, is a ridge of sand or gravel deposited by wave action on the shore just above the normal high water mark of a river or other water bodies.

It is also a flat strip of land with raised bank bordering a river or canal; an artificial ridge or embankment; a narrow space between a ditch and the base of a parapet; or even a path or grass strip beside a road.
