Bhut
Bhut is an imaginary being or spirit. Many Indians still believe that Bhuts really exist. An equivalent word in English is ghost. These spirits are believed to have something devilish in their nature. In Sanskrit, the dead body of a person is called bhut and the soul of the dead is called bhutatma, sometimes pret and pretatma. That is why, the word pretkarya refers to the ritual of the dead among the Hindus. It is believed that the spirit of a man dead becomes a bhut in between the time of death and transmigration into another life or becoming liberated from the life-and-death cycle. Its feminine form is known as bhutni. It is believed that they live in the cremation grounds, deserted or lonely places. Such places are known as haunted places. People may tell you about any number of haunted buildings, castles, trees, and so on.
However, Bhuts are not always malevolent. In Indian Mythology, they are supposed to be the attendants of Lord Shiva the god.
It should also be noted that Bhut was also the name of a priest of gods.
