Bidri

Bidri is an artwork of silver inlay on metal. The art originated in Persia (modern Iran) but was developed in India during the rule of the Bahmani Sultans in Bidar in Karnataka in the 14th century. Bidar gave its name to the Bidri artwork.

Broadly speaking, there are four main stages in the manufacture of Bidri. They are (i) casting (ii) engraving (iii) inlaying and (iv) oxidising. The whole process turns the surface of the article jet black providing a distinct contrast to the shining silver inlay. It is this contrast that lends Bidri a uniqueness.
