Bokaro

Bokaro is a district in Jharkhand state of India which headquarters at Bokaro town. It is located on the southern banks of river Damodar along Dhanbad - Ranchi highway. Bokaro is 47 kms. from Dhanbad is on Delhi - Howrah line.

This town is also known as Bokaro steel city. Here lies the fourth integrated steel plant in the Public Sector in India. It is worth mentioning here that Bokaro is a small river which flows into the Konar, a tributary of Damodar. A village by the name of Bokaro also lies on the northern bank of the Konar. The name of the district and town is perhaps derived from this village or the river.

Garga, one of the tributaries of Damodar meanders along the southern & eastern outskirts of the city. Just beyond the river Garga, the city is enveloped by the Satanpur hillocks. On the north the city is flanked by the high ranges of the Parasnath Hills. The District Headquarter is at B S City or Bokaro Steel City.

It is having latitude of 23°29' and longitude of 86°09'. The District Bokaro has a Geographical area of 2861 sq Km and 357663.36 Hectares of Land. The Average altitude of the Land is 210 mts from mean sea level. Chas is another important city of this district.

The District Bokaro of the Jharkhand State was created in the year 1991 by carving out one subdivision consisting of two blocks from Dhanbad District and six blocks from Giridih District. Situated in the Chhotanagpur Plateau, the vast rolling topography of the city is typical, strewn by graded valleys and winding streams. In this setting, within a short period of two decades, a new city with a strong multi-dimensional economic base, has blossomed into a regional urban centre of around 8.0 lakh people drawn from different parts of the country, giving the city the character of Mini India.

The district is important also for Bokaro Steel Limited Bokaro Thermal Power Station, Damodar Valley Corporation, Chandrapura Thermal Power Station and Tenughat Dam

The District may be categorised into three natural formation - Central plateau, Lower plateau and Damodar, Ganga & Tenughat Valley. The district is divided into two subdivisions Chas and Bermo. There are 8 blocks in this districts namely Bermo, Chandankiyari, Chas, Gomia, Jaridih, Kasmar, Nawadih, and Peterwar.

Major festivals of this district are Sarhul, Karma, Sohrai, Badna, Tusu, Id, X-mas, Holi, Dushahra etc.

Languages spoken in this district are Santhali, Mundari, Kurukh, Khortha, Nagpuriya, Sadri, Khariya, Hindi, Urdu, and Bangla.

Main musical instruments of the area are Bansuri, Arbansi, Sahnai, Madanvari, Singa, Sankh Mandar, Dhol, Dhak, Dhamsa, Nagara, Damama, Karha, Tasa, Jurinagra, Visamdhanki, Thapchanchu, Kartal, Jhanjh, Thala, Manjhira, and Ghanta.

Folk Music of this district includes Akhariya , Domkach , Dohari , Janani Jhumar, Mardana Jhumar, Faguwa, Udasi, Pawas, Jhumta, and Pratkali.

Major Folk Dances of this district are Paika, Chhaw, Jadur, Karma, Nachni, Natua, Matha, Sohrai, and Lurisayro. Paintings prevalent in this district are Oraon, Bhitichitra, Santhali, Bhitichitra, Jado, and Patiya.

The important rivers of this district are Damodar, Mayurakshi, barakar, Koyal, sankh, Son, Auranga, More, Karo, Bansloi, South Koel, Kharkai, Swarna Rekha, Ganga, Gumani, and Batane.
