Jharkhand

Jharkhand is a state in India. It came into being on 15 November, 2000, as the 28th State of the Union of India. It is the homeland of the tribals for which they had been dreaming for centuries. It has an area of about 79,714 sq kms (79.70 Lakh Hect). As per the 2001 census, the population of the state is 26,945,829. The Capital of this state is Ranchi. Jharkhand is bounded by West Bengal in the east, Uttar Pradesh and Chhattisgarh in the west, Bihar in the north and Odisha in the south.

This state was brought into existence through the provisions of the Bihar reorganization Act on November 15, 2000 - the birth anniversary of the legendary Bhagwan Birsa Munda.

Hindi is its principal language of the state. The other languages include Santali , Mundari , Kurukh, Khortha, Nagpuria, Sadri, Khariya, Panchparagnia, Ho, Malto, Karmali, Urdu, and Bangla.

Sarhul, Karma, Sohrai, Badna, Tusu, Id, X-mas, Holi and Dushara are the main festivals of the state.

The major Folk Music of Jharkhand are Akhariya Domkach, Dohari Domkach, Janani Jhumar, Mardana Jhumar, Faguwa, Udasi, Pawas, Daidhara, Pahilsanjha, Adhratiya, Bhinsariya, Pratkali, and Jhumta.

The main Folk dances of the state are Paika, Chaw, Jadur, Karma dance, Nachni, Natua, Agni, Choukara, Santhal, Jamda, Ghatwari, Matha, Sohrai dance, and Lurisayro.

Kadri, Gupijantra, Sarangi, Tuila, Vyang, Anandlahri, Bansuri, Arbansi, Sahnai, Madanvari, Singa, Sankh, Mandar, Dhol, Dhak, Dhamsa, Nagara, Damama, Karha, Tasa, Jurinagra, Visamdhanki, Thapchanchu, Kartal, Jhanjh, Thala, Manjhira, and Ghanta are the major musical instruments of the area.

Paintings in the state include Santali Bhittichitra, Oraon Bhittichitra, and Jado Patiya.

Major Rivers of the state are Damodar, Mayurakshi, Barakar, Koyal, Sankh, Son, Auranga, More, Karo, Bansloi, South Koel, Kharkai, Swarna Rekha, Ganga, Gumani, and Batane.

Jharkhand is famous for its rich mineral resources like Uranium, Mica, Bauxite, Granite, Gold, Silver, Graphite, Magnetite, Dolomite, Fireclay, Quartz, Fieldspar, Coal, Iron, Copper etc.

About 32 per cent of the coal, and 25 per cent of the copper deposits of the country are in Jharkhand. Forests and woodlands occupy more than 29% of the state which is amongst the highest in India.

There are 14 Lok Sabha and 81 Vidhan Sabha Constituency in the state.

History

The latest excavations and finds from various parts of Jharkhand show that people lived in Jharkhand from stone age. However, the History of Jharkhand dates back from the Vedic era of ancient India. Even in Vedas, the land was known as Jharkhand.According to a legend, Raja Jai Singh Deo of Orissa had declared himself the ruler of Jharkhand in the 13th century. It largely comprises forest tracks of Chhotanagpur plateau and Santhal Pargana and has distinct cultural traditions. In post-Independence era, the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha started a regular agitation, which impelled the government to establish the Jharkhand Area Autonomous Council in 1995, and finally attained the status of a full-fledged State in the year 2000.
