Brahmarshi

Brahmarshi is a great rishi, born a Braman and becoming a sage or rishi. This class of sages command greatest respect among the people and sages alike. They are considered higher than Maharshi (lit. a great rishi).

In ancient India, Vishvamitra, Khatriya by caste, became a rishi and performed great tapasya. He became a great rishi or Maharshi. However, was not satisfied with that. He wished to continue his tapasya to become a Brahmarshi. At last the wished status was granted to him by the gods, but he wanted it to be approved by the Brahmarshi Vashishtha. Vashishtha then approved it.
