Conrad of Thüringia

Conrad of Thüringia (c. 1206 – 1240) was a landgrave of Thüringia during 1231-1234, a historic and political region of Central Germany, who also became the Grand Master of the Teutonic Knights (1239-1240). He was proud, quick, fiery-tempered magnate, seized the archbishop of Mainz once, swung him round, and threatened to cut him in two. He stormed, plundered, and set fire to an imperial free town for an affront offered him. However, admonished of his sins he became penitent, and reconciled himself by monastic vow to the Pope and mankind about 1234.
