Dantzig
Dantzig, also Danzig, was the capital of West Prussia, once a Hanse town, on the Vistula, 4 miles from the mouth. It was one of the great ports and trading centres of Germany and in the North of Europe. It was traversed by canals, and many of the houses are built on piles of wood. It exported grain brought down the river on timber rafts from the great grain country in the South. It was one of the chief stations of the German navy.Napoleon Bonaparte created the semi-independent Free City of Danzig during 1807-1814. In 1939, the Free City of Danzig was annexed to Germany. The Treaty of Versailles, imposed on Germany after World War I, required Germany to cede West Prussia to Poland. Danzig is now Gdańsk in Poland.
