Dhanbad

The Dhanbad district is situated in the State of Jharkhand in India. It is also known as coal capital of India. It lies between 23°37'3" N and 24°4' N latitude and between 86° 6' 30' E and 86° 50' E longitude. Dhanbad town is the headquarters of this district.

Dhanbad district was constituted in 1956. The district is bounded on the west by Giridih and Bokaro on the north by Giridih and Dumka and on the east and south by Purulia district of West Bengal. The mining town of Dhanbad is internationally famous for its rich coal fields. It lies in the heart of India's coal fields at Jharia. An educational place of interest is the Indian School of Mines(ISM) noted for its curriculum throughout the world. The Topchanchi Lake lies 37 kms from Dhanbad is on NH 2. The beautiful water reservoirs of DVC at Maithan, Panchet & Talaiya are 46 kms, 49 kms, & 124 kms respectively from Dhanbad.

Dhanbad district has only one subdivision headquartered at Dhanbad. It has eight blocks namely Dhanbad, Jharia, Baghmara, Nirsa, Topchanchi, Tundi, Govindpur, and Baliapur. It has 1349 villages.
