East Asia

There are many definitions of East Asia. However, geographically, East Asia is the eastern part of Asia continent that is comprised of China Japan North Korea South Korea Mongolia and Taiwan. It covers about 12,000,000 sq kms, or about 28 percent of the Asian continent.

About 40 percent of the population of Asia or a quarter of all the people in the world live in this subregion of the Asia continent.

One of the other commonly agreed definition include in this subregion the countries and land area of the People's Republic of China, Hong Kong, Japan, Korea, Macao, Mongolia, the Ryukyu Islands, Taiwan, and a part of the Russian Federation in Asia. Some definitions are even broader and include Burma, Brunei, Cambodia, East Timor, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Philippines, Thailand and Vietnam.
