Entasis

Entasis, in architecture, is the slight convex curve applied in the shaft of a column.

It is applied for aesthetic purposes so that one may not have optical illusions.

Hero of Alexandria had said that entasis corrects the optical illusion of concavity in the columns which the fallible human eye would create if a correction were not made.
