Gilbert Islands

Gilbert Islands, also called Kingsmill Group, is a name given to a group of islands in the Republic of Kiribati, in the Pacific, of coral formation, lying on the equator between 172° and 177° East long. The islands, 16 in number, formally became an independent nation on 12 July 1979. The Islands were discovered in 1788, and annexed by Britain in 1892. In 1915, the Gilbert and Ellice Islands were proclaimed a colony of the British Empire.
